Rabbit Vaccinations

At Rutland Vets in Northamptonshire, we strongly believe that every rabbit deserves the best possible protection. Just like cats and dogs, pet rabbits are vulnerable to serious infectious diseases. Vaccinations are essential to safeguard your rabbit’s health, even if they live indoors, because diseases like myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease can be carried into the home via insects, bedding, or footwear.

Which Diseases Do Rabbit Vaccinations Protect Against?

Our vaccination service protects your rabbit against two deadly conditions:

  • Myxomatosis: A fast-progressing, frequently fatal viral disease spread by fleas, mosquitoes, mites, and direct contact. It causes swelling around the eyes, lips, and genitals, respiratory distress, and weakened immunity.
  • Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD): There are two strains, RHD1 and RHD2, both highly contagious and often fatal. Transmission can occur via contact or contaminated surfaces, including clothing and bedding

Fortunately, a combined vaccine (e.g. Nobivac Myxo‑RHD Plus) now provides protection against myxomatosis and both strains of RHD in a single injection.

When Should Rabbits Be Vaccinated?

  • Initial vaccination can begin from around 5–7 weeks old, once the rabbit has weaned.
  • Annual boosters are essential and help maintain immunity year after year. Some areas with high disease incidence may recommend a booster every six months for added protection.

If your rabbit misses a booster or hasn’t been vaccinated before, our team can advise on a safe catch-up programme.

What Happens at the Vaccination Appointment?

Your rabbit’s vaccination visit includes:

  1. A complete health check, weighing your rabbit and assessing dental, ear, and overall well‑being
  2. Administration of the combined Myxo‑RHD Plus vaccine, or a tailored course if previous vaccinations are incomplete
  3. Monitoring for any mild side effects, such as mild lethargy or soreness at the injection site (rare and generally short-lived)
  4. Issuing a vaccination certificate to keep as proof, for health plans, boarding, or future boosters

Vaccination appointments are also an excellent opportunity to discuss any concerns you have about your rabbit’s overall health and lifestyle.

Why Rabbit Vaccinations Make a Difference

  • Protects against fatal diseases that have no effective treatment once contracted
  • Essential even for indoor rabbits, as disease can be carried from outside via insects or personal items
  • Required by many boarding facilities and insurers, who ask for proof of vaccination and boosters

Routine Vaccination Costs and Plans

Vaccination fees vary by clinic. For example, a combined Myxo‑RHD Plus vaccine typically costs between £60–£80, with annual booster injections included. Our rabbit vaccinations are currently £70 but with our lifetime care club you could save money with every visit!

Ask us about our Pet Health Plan, which helps spread the cost of preventive care, including vaccination.
