Why Should I Neuter My Rabbit?

Neutering your rabbit offers a range of benefits—for both their health and behaviour.

  • For male rabbits (bucks), neutering involves the removal of the testicles (castration).
  • For female rabbits (does), it involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus (spaying).

Neutering helps to prevent breeding, reduces territorial or aggressive behaviours, and makes it easier for rabbits to live harmoniously in pairs or groups—something essential for their emotional wellbeing.

When Should Rabbits Be Neutered?

At Rutland Vets, we generally recommend:

  • Male rabbits can be neutered from around 10–12 weeks, once the testicles have descended.
  • Female rabbits can be neutered from about 4–6 months, depending on their size and health.

Early neutering helps prevent the development of unwanted behaviours and health problems. We’ll always carry out a thorough health check before booking your rabbit’s procedure to ensure they’re ready and safe to undergo surgery.

Key Benefits of Rabbit Neutering

Neutering your rabbit offers a range of health and behavioural benefits for both males and females, helping them live longer, happier lives.

For Male Rabbits (Castration):

  • Reduces aggression and territorial marking (such as spraying urine)
  • Makes it easier to bond with another rabbit
  • Prevents unwanted pregnancies if kept with a female

For Female Rabbits (Spaying):

  • Removes the risk of uterine cancer, which affects a high percentage of unspayed female rabbits
  • Reduces the chance of false pregnancies and associated stress
  • Helps with bonding and allows rabbits to live in social groups peacefully

What to Expect on the Day

Your rabbit will be admitted in the morning and cared for by our experienced veterinary and nursing team throughout their stay. Neutering is performed under general anaesthetic, and we take every precaution to ensure your rabbit’s comfort and safety during and after the procedure.

Most rabbits recover well and go home the same day with pain relief and aftercare instructions. We’ll also arrange a post-op check to monitor healing and answer any follow-up questions you may have.
