What Is Cat Neutering?

Cat neutering is a routine surgical procedure that prevents your cat from reproducing.

  • In male cats (tomcats), this involves the removal of the testicles and is called castration.
  • In female cats, it involves the removal of the ovaries and usually the uterus, and is known as spaying.

These procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic and are quick and safe when performed by experienced veterinary professionals, like our team here at Rutland Vets.

When Should You Book Cat Neutering?

We recommend neutering cats from around four to five months of age, before they reach sexual maturity. At this age, the procedure is straightforward, and your cat will benefit from health and behavioural advantages as they grow.

Even if your cat is older or has already had a litter, neutering is still recommended and can be safely carried out at most stages of life.

Benefits of Cat Neutering

Neutering offers several health and welfare benefits for both male and female cats:

For Female Cats (Spaying):

  • Prevents unwanted pregnancies
  • Reduces the risk of womb infections (pyometra)
  • Significantly lowers the risk of mammary (breast) cancer
  • Prevents the stress and behavioural changes associated with being in heat

For Male Cats (Castration):

  • Reduces aggressive and territorial behaviours
  • Helps prevent roaming and the risk of road accidents
  • Lowers the risk of testicular cancer and certain prostate conditions
  • Reduces the chances of spraying and strong-smelling urine
  • Helps prevent the spread of feline diseases such as FIV, often transmitted through fighting
